This weekend (February 15, 2025) The New York Times podcast, The Daily, published “The Interview: Senator Ruben Gallego on Democrats Problem.” A worthwhile listen. The Arizona lawmaker offers his perspective of what needs to change for the Democratic party and how it communicates with key constituents, including men, Latinos and Trump voters.
Refraining from being political for this RepBlog, the overarching takeaway from Senator Gallego’s interview was the importance of knowing your audience before communicating with them. Senator Gallego describes in clear detail the importance of truly knowing his voting audience, specifically what is the most important things to them, what language (i.e., messages, tone, exact phrases) do they use, and what keeps them up at night? He provided examples of how he listens and understands Hispanic men in his state and intently wants to know what’s important to them. The way he talks to these men matter. He knows that what matters to them is having money, getting rich and having a “big ass truck” or trokita.
At ReputaitonUs, we emphasize to our corporate partner clients that any quality communication strategy starts with the WHO. Who is your audience? WHER does your WHO get their information? WHAT language does your WHO use? WHY do they use such language? What keeps your WHO up at night? WHAT excites our WHO?
Conversely, if you don’t really understand your WHO, your messages will be lost in translation. While well-intended, your messages MUST resonate with your WHO or you lost them.
